Commuter Etiquette : Say, "Thank you."

Want to make your commute a little bit better?  You're going to interact with many people on your way to or from work.  Next time one of them does something for you, say "Thank you."

Someone held the door open instead of letting it hit you in the face?  "Thank you."

Oncoming car stopped at a green light so you could cross the street?  "Thank you."

Girl that gives you your coffee and bagel in the morning?  "Thank you."

Get the idea?  It's not that hard.  My 2 year old can do it.  It only takes a second to make somebody else's morning.  And who knows, one morning you might find that people are saying it to you, too.

Love Your Work. Your commute will go faster.

One of the best ways to make your commute fly by is to love your job.  Nobody looks forward to going somewhere they hate.

One of my new favorite podcasts is I Love My Work, by Dan Miller.  Based on his popular radio show, the podcast is 3 hours of motivational discussion about how to either enjoy the working you're doing, or get out of it and find something new for yourself.  Much of the show includes great tips for inventors, authors and entrepreneurs.  But those of us doing the commute thing to our 9-5 job get some love too, with tips about negotiating salary, writing resumes ... that sort of thing.

Mostly I love it for the motivation.  It's a very up-tempo show.  It gets you in the mood to enjoy what you're doing.  I've listened to plenty of podcasts that talk about "the grind" and serve as a place to vent about how horrible work is.  There's a time and a place for that.  But Monday morning on the train into the city is not one of them.  Sometimes you want to get yourself pumped up and be reminded that it's ok to love what you do.  Dan Miller's the man to help you do it.

If you're looking for some new podcasts to occupy your listening time, I highly recommend it.
