Personally I could probably live without one. During the good weather I can bike to work, and at only 5-10 minutes away, my wife could pack the kids in the car and zip me over there / pick me up when it’s really needed. It’d be annoying to spend the whole winter doing that, to be sure, but it wouldn’t be the end of the world.
However, here’s where my big advantage lies – I own that one. No car payment. So other than the insurance on the thing, occasional gas and very occasional maintenance, it’s not that big of a money sink.

Next month I´ll take the train to work.
From home I have 5 minutes to go to the station.
From workplace it`s about 15 Minutes to the station.
It`s a try. If I can handle it, I hold on.

That was my old life -- take the train to work, and then walk the maybe 20-25 minutes across town. Great exercise, and once you get set up to use the time appropriately (hello, ipod+podcasts) it's quite the zone.
The problem I had was I still had to drive to the train station! So rather than making my commute easier on a number of fronts, it added time, expense, and complicating factors like traffic :(.
